PE Bag Strength Test Guide – How Much Can a Plastic Bag Really Hold?

"Will this bag break if I put 10 kg in it?"

That is one of the most common questions we hear. When customers receive samples, the most direct way they test is to stretch the bag or fill it with things to see if it holds. But there is a big difference between a bag that "feels OK" when you pull it once and one that survives real shipping and warehousing.

Today we break "bag strength" down into two different properties, then show you a few tests you can run without any instruments.

"Tensile strength" and "puncture resistance" are two different things

Many people think a bag is strong if it is hard to tear. In reality, that feeling combines two separate abilities:

Tensile strength – how much force the film can take when pulled from both sides before it thins out and breaks.
Puncture resistance – how much force a sharp object (like a screwdriver or a product corner) can apply to the bag before it gets punctured.

Two extreme examples make this clear:

  • Cling film actually has decent tensile strength – you can stretch it very thin without it breaking. But its puncture resistance is poor; a fingernail pokes right through.
  • Thick black PE courier bags do not stretch much (low elongation), but pushing a sharp object through them takes real effort.

So when you choose a bag, ask yourself: is your product mostly heavy or mostly sharp-edged?

  • Soft, heavy items like textiles and bedding → focus on tensile strength
  • Hardware, electronic parts, or packaging with sharp corners → focus on puncture resistance

How to test bag quality yourself, outside the factory

Here are three simple tests you can run anytime. You only need a sample bag, a pair of scissors, and a few books.

Test 1: Hand-tear test – judging tensile strength

Take a bag and cut a strip about 2 cm wide from different parts (bottom, side, and body). Hold both ends and pull steadily and evenly until it breaks.

  • Good bag: you clearly feel resistance; it stretches to 1.5× its original length before tearing
  • Substandard bag: it snaps almost immediately, or the break is very clean and straight (a sign of recycled material mixed in)
  • Note: virgin-material PE bags turn white where they stretch (stress whitening) before they break – this is normal

Test 2: Puncture test – judging puncture resistance

Find an ordinary ballpoint pen (tip retracted) or a chopstick. Lay the bag flat on a table and press the tip down steadily, and see how much force it takes to push through.

  • Good bag: it takes visible effort to puncture, and the sound when it breaks is dull
  • Substandard bag: it pops with almost no pressure, or the hole quickly grows bigger

Advanced version: if you really will be packing sharp-cornered products (like hardware parts), use the "simulation method" – fill a sample bag with your actual product, seal it, and repeatedly lift and set it down 20 times, checking for damage caused by corners pushing through.

Test 3: Static load test – simulating real storage

Get a woven bag or a sturdy shopping bag to use as an outer bag. Fill the PE bag you want to test with a fixed weight (rice, sand, or books), seal it, place it inside the outer bag, and leave it for 24 hours.

  • Good bag: after 24 hours, the bottom and seal show no change at all
  • Warning sign: tiny cracks at the bottom (stress cracking) or the seal starting to open

This simulates pallet stacking in a warehouse. You might think static storage is easy, but PE film under long-term stress will show stress cracking if the raw material or the process is not right – which is why some bags look fine when packed but leak after sitting in a warehouse for a few days.

The two key factors that decide bag strength

1. Raw material: virgin vs recycled

This is the most important difference. Bags made from virgin PE have tensile strength and puncture resistance above normal standards. Bags with recycled material mixed in tear unusually easily, and the break is very clean, like cutting paper. This is why we specifically state "virgin PE material" in all our product descriptions – it is not a slogan, it genuinely makes a difference.

2. Resin type: LDPE vs HDPE vs LLDPE

At the same thickness:

  • LDPE – good stretch, highest elongation, but average puncture resistance. Good for apparel and soft packaging.
  • HDPE – stiff, excellent puncture resistance, but poor stretch and low elongation. Good for packaging that needs structure.
  • LLDPE – the best of both: high tensile strength and strong puncture resistance. Our top recommendation for heavy-duty packaging.

💡 Pro tip: if bag strength matters to you, ask the factory for a physical property test report (tensile strength in MPa, elongation at break in %, puncture force in N). Reputable factories have these. If they cannot provide one, run the three tests above – they will get you 80–90% of the way.
