PE Bag Material Guide: LDPE vs HDPE vs LLDPE -What's the Difference?

If you've ever tried to order custom poly bags, you've probably come across three letters: LDPE, HDPE, and LLDPE. They all start with 'polyethylene,' but they behave very differently on the production line โ€“ and on your product.

This guide explains what each material does best, so you can order with confidence.

LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene)

LDPE is the most common material for plastic bags. It's flexible, transparent, and has a soft feel.

  • Best for: Garment bags, bread bags, dry cleaning bags, and general-purpose custom flat bags.
  • Key traits: Stretchy, good clarity, heat-sealable, economical.
  • Thickness range: 0.015-.10 mm.
  • Relative cost: $$ (mid-range)

HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene)

HDPE is stiffer and more rigid than LDPE. It has a crinkly feel and lower clarity -but it's stronger per micron, so you can use less material.

  • Best for: Retail shopping bags, grocery bags, T-shirt bags, and merchandise bags.
  • Key traits: High tensile strength, economical, less transparent.
  • Thickness range: 0.010-.05 mm.
  • Relative cost: $ (most economical)

LLDPE (Linear Low-Density Polyethylene)

LLDPE combines the flexibility of LDPE with the strength of HDPE. It's tougher and more puncture-resistant, making it ideal for heavy-duty applications.

  • Best for: Stretch wrap, heavy-duty bags, frozen food packaging, industrial liners.
  • Key traits: High puncture resistance, good tear strength, excellent stretchability.
  • Thickness range: 0.015-.20 mm.
  • Relative cost: $$$ (premium)

Which One Should You Choose?

There's no single 'best' material -it depends on what you're packaging.

  • Need clarity and softness? โ†’LDPE (most common for poly bags)
  • Maximizing strength at lowest cost? โ†’HDPE (good for retail bags)
  • Need puncture resistance for heavy items? โ†’LLDPE (or a blend)

Many factories can also produce blended materials that combine properties. If you're unsure, start with a sample order in your most likely material and test it with your actual product.

๐Ÿ’ก Virgin PE Material Matters: All of the above materials perform best when made from virgin PE resin. Virgin material gives consistent thickness, reliable heat seals, and predictable strength -batch after batch. We use virgin PE as our standard, which is why our bags have uniform thickness and clean seals.

Custom Options

Every PE bag type can be made in LDPE, HDPE, or LLDPE โ€“ or a custom blend. OEM printing (gravure) is available regardless of material choice. Minimum order is 10,000 pcs per size, with trial orders from 5,000 pcs available for new customers.
